SDET resume

An SDET is hired as an engineer who specialises in testing, and the resume has to read that way. Show the frameworks and infrastructure you built, not the test cases you executed.

No card required. You only pay if you download.

Show what you built

The distinction between QA and SDET is construction. Frameworks, harnesses, test infrastructure, tooling other engineers use — that is the evidence.

Engineering signal counts

Code quality, design decisions and CI/CD ownership matter as much on an SDET resume as they do on a developer one.

Reliability is the product

Flaky suites are the defining problem of the role. Solving one is worth more on a resume than any tool name.

Templates

Every design, one set of content.

Write it once and change the design whenever you like — what you typed never moves.

How an SDET resume differs from a QA one

A QA resume argues that quality improved. An SDET resume argues that you built the thing that made it improve — and that other engineers used it. The technical depth expected is a developer's, so the resume should carry a developer's evidence: systems designed, trade-offs made, code that outlived your involvement.

The most valuable thing an SDET can show is that they made testing cheap for everyone else. A harness that lets a developer write an integration test in five minutes changes a team's behaviour permanently, and that is a much stronger claim than a coverage percentage.

  • Describe frameworks you designed, and who else used them.
  • Include the CI/CD and environment work — SDETs usually own more of it than they admit.
  • State how you handled flakiness, parallelism and test data. These are the hard parts.
  • Give language depth: an SDET is expected to write production-quality code.
  • Mention performance, load or security testing if you owned any of it.

Why applicant tracking systems reject good resumes

Most large employers run applications through an applicant tracking system before a person sees them. The system extracts text, tries to work out where your jobs and dates are, and stores the result. When it cannot parse a resume, what reaches the recruiter is a garbled record — and a garbled record from a strong candidate looks the same as one from a weak one.

Almost every parsing failure comes from formatting, not content. Text inside images or icons is invisible to it. Multi-column layouts get read straight across, interleaving a sidebar with the main column. Tables scramble. Headers and footers are frequently dropped entirely, taking your phone number with them.

  • Real, selectable text — never a picture of a page, and never text baked into a graphic.
  • One clear column for the content a parser has to read in order.
  • Standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills. Clever names confuse the matcher.
  • Dates in a consistent, readable format, next to the role they belong to.
  • Contact details in the body of the document, not in the page header.

Skills an SDET resume should carry

Weighted toward building. A list identical to a manual tester's undersells the role.

The same experience, written twice

The second column reads like an engineer wrote it, because that is who the role hires.

Before

Created automation framework for regression testing.

After

Designed a Playwright framework with fixture-based test data and parallel execution, adopted by four product teams to write their own tests without QA involvement.

Adoption is the proof. A framework nobody else used is a personal project with a work laptop.

Before

Maintained test environments and CI pipelines.

After

Moved integration tests onto ephemeral Testcontainers environments, removing a shared staging queue that had been the main cause of failed builds.

Names the problem, the design decision and what it removed.

Before

Worked on reducing flaky tests.

After

Built retry telemetry that identified the twenty flakiest specs, fixed the underlying waits, and quarantined the rest behind an ownership rule.

Shows a method rather than an intention. "Worked on reducing" does not say whether it worked.

Common questions

What is the difference between a QA engineer and an SDET resume?

Depth of construction. A QA resume shows testing judgement and quality outcomes; an SDET resume shows both plus the engineering that produced them — frameworks designed, infrastructure owned, code other engineers depend on. If your resume would read identically for either role, it is under-selling the SDET one.

Do I need production development experience?

Not always, but you need to demonstrate production-quality engineering somewhere. Test infrastructure used by other teams counts fully — it is real software with real users who are your colleagues.

How long should a SDET resume be?

One page up to about eight years of experience, two pages after that. Length is not a virtue in either direction — a two-page resume padded to look substantial reads worse than a tight single page, and cramming fifteen years onto one page by shrinking the type reads worse than both.

Will the AI make things up about me?

No, and it is prevented from doing so twice over. Every prompt states that facts may only come from what you wrote, and every suggestion is then checked against your own text before you see it — if it contains a company, a number or a qualification you did not supply, it is discarded rather than shown. Suggestions are also never applied automatically; you accept them.

How much does it cost?

Building is free — every template, every section, the AI features and the preview. You pay only to download: a pass from ₹49 unlocks every document in its category for 30 days, or All Access at ₹199 unlocks everything. One payment; nothing renews automatically.
