Resumes by role

Software engineer resume

Engineering resumes fail for a predictable reason: they list technologies instead of showing what was built and what changed. Here is what to put on one, with before-and-after bullets and templates that parse cleanly.

No card required. You only pay if you download.

Impact over stack

Anyone can list React and Postgres. What separates resumes is what you shipped, at what scale, and what got better because of it.

Skills, grouped

A flat list of thirty technologies is unreadable. Group by language, framework, infrastructure and practice so a reader finds what they came for.

Parses cleanly

Single-column templates marked ATS-safe, so the tracking system reads your dates and titles rather than scrambling them.

Templates

Every design, one set of content.

Write it once and change the design whenever you like — what you typed never moves.

What an engineering resume needs to establish

A hiring manager reading an engineering resume is answering three questions: what do you build, how big are the things you have worked on, and does the experience match what we need. Everything on the page should serve one of those. The technology list matters, but it matters as evidence, not as the argument.

Scale is the detail most engineers leave out and the one most readers want. "Built an API" says nothing about difficulty. "Built the payments API handling four million transactions a day" is a different job entirely, and it is the same sentence with one fact added.

  • Name the systems you owned, not the tickets you closed.
  • Give scale where you have it: traffic, data size, team size, number of services.
  • Include the outcome — latency, cost, reliability, delivery time, a shipped product.
  • Link a portfolio or GitHub only if what is there is worth opening.
  • Keep a projects section only if it adds something your jobs do not.

Why applicant tracking systems reject good resumes

Most large employers run applications through an applicant tracking system before a person sees them. The system extracts text, tries to work out where your jobs and dates are, and stores the result. When it cannot parse a resume, what reaches the recruiter is a garbled record — and a garbled record from a strong candidate looks the same as one from a weak one.

Almost every parsing failure comes from formatting, not content. Text inside images or icons is invisible to it. Multi-column layouts get read straight across, interleaving a sidebar with the main column. Tables scramble. Headers and footers are frequently dropped entirely, taking your phone number with them.

  • Real, selectable text — never a picture of a page, and never text baked into a graphic.
  • One clear column for the content a parser has to read in order.
  • Standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills. Clever names confuse the matcher.
  • Dates in a consistent, readable format, next to the role they belong to.
  • Contact details in the body of the document, not in the page header.

Skills worth listing, grouped

Group them, and list only what you would be comfortable being asked about in an interview. A skill you cannot discuss is a trap you set for yourself.

The same experience, written twice

Nothing was invented between the two columns. The facts were already true; the second version states them.

Before

Responsible for developing and maintaining backend microservices.

After

Owned six payment microservices handling four million transactions a day, and cut p99 latency from 800ms to 210ms by moving settlement off the request path.

Names the scope, the scale and the result. "Responsible for" describes a job description; the rewrite describes work.

Before

Worked on improving the CI/CD pipeline.

After

Rebuilt the deployment pipeline around parallel test execution, taking the release cycle from a scheduled weekly event to on-demand deploys.

States what changed for the team, not what you were assigned.

Before

Used React and TypeScript to build user interfaces.

After

Built the customer dashboard in React and TypeScript, replacing three legacy screens and removing the support queue they generated.

The technologies survive, but they are now evidence for an outcome instead of the whole sentence.

Common questions

Should I include personal projects?

Include them when they show something your jobs do not — a language you want to move into, a system you owned end to end, or real users. Skip tutorial projects and course exercises; they signal the opposite of what you intend.

How many technologies should I list?

Enough to match the role and no more. Fifteen to twenty-five, grouped, is a normal range. A list of sixty reads as either unfocused or untrue, and the interview will find out which.

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page up to about eight years of experience, two pages after that. Length is not a virtue in either direction — a two-page resume padded to look substantial reads worse than a tight single page, and cramming fifteen years onto one page by shrinking the type reads worse than both.

Will the AI make things up about me?

No, and it is prevented from doing so twice over. Every prompt states that facts may only come from what you wrote, and every suggestion is then checked against your own text before you see it — if it contains a company, a number or a qualification you did not supply, it is discarded rather than shown. Suggestions are also never applied automatically; you accept them.

How much does it cost?

Building is free — every template, every section, the AI features and the preview. You pay only to download: a pass from ₹49 unlocks every document in its category for 30 days, or All Access at ₹199 unlocks everything. One payment; nothing renews automatically.
