Resumes by stage

Student resume

For an internship, nobody expects a career. They are looking for evidence you can learn quickly and finish things — and you almost certainly have more of that evidence than you think.

No card required. You only pay if you download.

More counts than you think

Society roles, a hackathon, tutoring, a part-time job, an open-source contribution — all of it is evidence of finishing things with other people.

Written for internships

An internship resume argues potential and reliability, not a track record. That is a different argument and it is easier to make.

Ready to print or send

A PDF with selectable text for online applications, and a clean printed version for a campus fair.

Every design, one set of content.

What counts as experience

Students discount the things that actually read well. Running a college society means budgeting, coordinating people and hitting dates. A part-time retail job means turning up reliably and handling customers under pressure. Tutoring means explaining hard things to someone who does not get them yet. All three answer questions an internship interviewer has.

Write them the way you would write a job: what you were responsible for, how big it was, and what happened. "Treasurer, Coding Club" is a title. "Ran the ₹80,000 annual budget for a 200-member coding club and organised a 12-team hackathon" is a paragraph an interviewer will ask you about.

  • Coursework projects, especially anything with real users.
  • Hackathons, competitions and open-source contributions.
  • Society and volunteer roles, described by responsibility and scale.
  • Part-time and vacation work, for reliability and people skills.
  • Teaching, tutoring and mentoring, which show communication directly.

Resume or CV?

For internships and industry jobs, you want a resume: one page, targeted at the role, only what is relevant. For academic applications — research positions, PhD programmes, some scholarships — you want a CV, which runs longer and lists publications, conferences, teaching and funding in full.

Both are supported here. The quieter serif templates take the length a CV needs without looking cramped, and the same content renders into either shape.

Why applicant tracking systems reject good resumes

Most large employers run applications through an applicant tracking system before a person sees them. The system extracts text, tries to work out where your jobs and dates are, and stores the result. When it cannot parse a resume, what reaches the recruiter is a garbled record — and a garbled record from a strong candidate looks the same as one from a weak one.

Almost every parsing failure comes from formatting, not content. Text inside images or icons is invisible to it. Multi-column layouts get read straight across, interleaving a sidebar with the main column. Tables scramble. Headers and footers are frequently dropped entirely, taking your phone number with them.

  • Real, selectable text — never a picture of a page, and never text baked into a graphic.
  • One clear column for the content a parser has to read in order.
  • Standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills. Clever names confuse the matcher.
  • Dates in a consistent, readable format, next to the role they belong to.
  • Contact details in the body of the document, not in the page header.

Common questions

I have never had a job. What do I put in the experience section?

Rename what you have. A section called Projects, or Leadership & Activities, carrying society roles, hackathons, volunteering and coursework projects does exactly the job. Leave out an empty "Experience" heading — a blank section draws the eye to the gap.

Should I include my CGPA?

Include it if it is strong, or if the employer asks — many campus processes do. If it is not strong, leave it off and give the space to a project. A resume without a CGPA prompts a question; a resume with a weak one answers it before you can.

How do I write a resume for an internship with no relevant coursework yet?

Lead with what you have taught yourself. A small project in the technology the internship uses, built on your own initiative, is a stronger signal than a syllabus you have not reached yet — and it gives the interview somewhere good to go.
